IT SECTOR OUTLOOK

Can Indian IT Grow Again? AI, Q2 Results and the Road to Recovery

AI scared investors out of Indian IT. Then October brought its best week in 18 years. Here's what the numbers really say about whether the sector can get back on track.

The big question: will AI shrink Indian IT services, or become its next growth engine?

For two years, one worry has followed Indian IT: will AI hollow out a business built on armies of engineers? The index slid 12.6% in 2025 and, even after October's surge, is still about 16% lower in 2026. A few weeks ago, the sector seemed to answer back. Whether that answer holds is the real question.

How We Got Here: The AI Shock Timeline

2025
Nifty IT loses 12.6% as client budgets tighten.

5 Feb 2026
After Anthropic's Claude Cowork plug-ins spark automation fears, the index falls nearly 6% in a day, its steepest drop since March 2020.

24 Feb
Fresh fears that AI coding tools could eat into legacy-modernisation work leave the index down over 21% in the month.

June
A newer AI model reignites worries; the index is down nearly 27% for the year.

12–16 Oct
Q2 results beat low expectations. Nifty IT jumps 11.72% to 31,924.

"Our read" is an editorial summary, not a rating or recommendation.

Read the fine print: TCS grew 11.2% in rupees but only 2.8% in constant currency. With the rupee near ₹95 to the dollar, headline growth looks better than the underlying business. Always compare constant-currency numbers.

Deal flow is also lumpy. Wipro's large-deal bookings (in $ million) show how one weak quarter can undo the story:

Why the Rally Wobbled

The recovery hit a bump on 28 October. Infosys fell about 5% and the Nifty IT index slipped nearly 4% after four brokerage downgrades following its weaker FY27 outlook. The guidance includes roughly 1.7% from acquisitions, which implies organic growth near zero. The index had gained about 12% in October until then.

Can AI Become the Growth Engine?

The case for recovery

  • AI is now about 10% of revenue at TCS and Infosys and growing fast

  • An ICICI Direct note sees an AI-led opportunity of $300–400B by 2030

  • Large deals and bookings are healthy at TCS, Infosys, HCLTech and TechM

  • Margins are holding

The case for caution

  • The same note expects AI to cut traditional IT revenue by about 2–3% a year, with recovery from FY28-end or FY29

  • Growth is low single-digit; discretionary spending is soft

  • The US' $100,000 H-1B fee is reshaping hiring

  • Guidance cuts (Infosys) can erase a rally quickly

These are forecasts and estimates, not certainties.

5 Signals That Would Confirm a Real Recovery

1
Constant-currency growth rising beyond the current 1–3% range.

2
Large deals converting into revenue, such as Wipro's two delayed contracts.

3
AI revenue growing faster than the 2–3% deflation it may cause elsewhere.

4
Organic growth, not acquisitions, doing the lifting.

5
Guidance upgrades in the next result season, not cuts.

Verdict: Can IT Get Back on Track?

Stabilising, yes. A return to the old double-digit growth, not soon. Profits and AI revenue are rising, but top-line growth is still in low single digits and FY27 may stay that way.

The sector's recovery now depends on one thing: whether new AI work grows faster than the traditional work it replaces. Until the signals above turn, expect more volatility, not a straight line.

What Should Investors Do?

  • Don't treat IT as one block. TCS, Infosys, HCLTech, TechM and Wipro are on different paths, as the table shows.

  • Don't chase after a 12% week. Staggered entries and a stop-loss matter more than catching the bottom.

  • Prefer diversification. A sector bet can swing hard. A SIP through a mutual fund spreads the risk, and a demat account is needed for direct stocks.

Quick FAQs

Is AI really replacing Indian IT jobs and revenue?

AI is pressuring routine work such as testing and maintenance, and analysts model 2–3% annual revenue deflation. At the same time, companies are earning real AI revenue. The net effect is still unfolding.

Is Nifty IT a buy after the October rally?

This article isn't a recommendation. The index is still below where it started the year, but guidance cuts show risks remain. Decide by company fundamentals, valuation and your risk tolerance.

When could Indian IT growth recover?

One sector note sees recovery from the end of FY28 or FY29, while FY27 growth stays low single-digit. These are estimates and can change.
