Safer, steadier or simply different: what each option pays, what it needs, what it costs and where it can hurt you.

Shares are one tool. A good plan usually uses more than one.
When the Nifty slides for weeks, the obvious question is: where else can my money work? The honest answer depends on who you are. Meet three investors, then find yourself in one of them.
Asha, 34 Saves ₹5,000 a month. Wants zero sleepless nights. | Ravi, 52 Has a ₹10 lakh lump sum. Wants regular income. | Meena, 27 Has a long horizon. Can stomach swings. |
Higher potential reward almost always means higher risk. Here is where each option sits:
| Very low PPF, NSC, SCSS, SSY | Low Bank FD | Medium REITs, debt funds | High Gold, equity funds, P2P | Very high Crypto |
Government-backed, tax-free, 7.1% for October–December 2026. Start with just ₹500 a year (max ₹1.5 lakh). Catch: a 15-year lock-in, so it suits long goals.
Post-office schemes paying 7.7%, 8.2% and 8.2% respectively. The government has held these rates steady this quarter, though they are reviewed every three months. SCSS is for seniors; SSY is for a girl child.
Roughly 6–7% at large banks, locked in when you book. With the RBI lifting the repo rate to 5.50%, new FD rates could edge up. Interest is taxable; deposits are insured up to ₹5 lakh per bank.
Around ₹1.5 lakh per 10 grams in mid-October. No fixed return, and prices swing. A Gold ETF unit costs only about ₹120 but needs a demat account. For the long view, read our gold price forecast.
Own part of offices and malls via NSE units. In FY26, listed REITs paid out over ₹8,900 crore; Embassy paid ₹25.28 a unit and Mindspace ₹24.09, per Outlook Money. Payouts vary and unit prices move.
Start at ₹100–₹500 a month. Debt and hybrid funds are calmer; equity funds are still market-linked. The Nifty 50's 25-year average was about 12.6% a year, but that is history, not a promise.
RBI-regulated platforms lend your money to borrowers at higher advertised rates. If a borrower defaults, you take the loss, and there's no deposit insurance.
Unregulated and extremely volatile. India taxes gains at a flat 30% with 1% TDS, and losses can't be set off against other income.

Compare before you commit: return, minimum amount, cost and risk.
You invest ₹1,00,000 | At NSC's 7.7% ~₹1.45 lakh | At an assumed 6% ~₹1.34 lakh |
Illustrative, with annual compounding. Government rates are reviewed quarterly, and the 6% is an assumption, not a quote.
| Option | What you pay |
|---|---|
| PPF / FD / small savings | No running cost. FD and most small-savings interest is taxable; PPF is tax-free. |
| Gold ETF / REIT | Demat account and brokerage; gold ETFs also charge a small annual fee. |
| Mutual funds | Yearly expense ratio, usually lower in direct plans. |
| Crypto | 30% tax + 1% TDS + exchange fees. |
Options and futures are not a safer route. A SEBI study found options caused about 92% of individual traders' aggregate losses in FY25–26. Be wary of overseas forex apps (check they're authorised for Indian residents) and of anyone promising daily or guaranteed returns.
Government-backed schemes like PPF and NSC carry the lowest risk, followed by insured bank FDs. Safe usually means lower returns.
Yes. Senior citizens can use SCSS, and others can consider FD interest payouts or REIT distributions. REIT payouts aren't fixed, so don't rely on them alone.
Not necessarily. Long-term wealth building often includes some market exposure. The goal is a mix that matches your risk tolerance and time horizon.
Asha: PPF plus a small SIP, built up gradually.
Ravi: a split across FD or SCSS for income, with a small gold or REIT slice.
Meena: equity SIPs for growth, with only a tiny share in anything speculative.
Start with what you understand, invest small first, and never put in money you can't afford to lose.
